Can Life Now Be Created in The Lab ?

January 22, 2009

Nope. Not yet. But, are we at the initial stages of being able to create life from chemicals ? The possibility of it definitely looks promising. The Jan 8th issue of Science reports that researchers at the Scripps Institute, led by Prof. Gerald Joyce , seem to have created molecules that self-replicate and even evolve and compete to win or lose.

Here’s the article from LiveScience and the National Public Radio interview of Prof. Joyce. The NPR introduction follows

Scientists long to understand how a bunch of chemicals on the early Earth transformed themselves into the first living creatures. Now one lab has made a self-replicating set of RNA molecules that the scientists say may mimic what might have happened during the early evolution of life.

Here’s the abstract of it from Science (You need to be a subscriber to read the full paper/article).

A link to a discussion by Prof. PZ Myers on his blog Pharygula is here.

Fascinating stuff !!

i am really excited that they are trying to create life. but we’re only human beings too, and we make mistakes. so there’s a possibility that if we do create life, we might actually kill it instead. not saying that it is gonna happen, but you never know.
but its very very fascinating as you said!

Thanks for your comment sweetangel. Well it’s too early to say anything at this point. And yes, we humans don’t always do the most inteligent things with our creations, so only time will tell if we have smartened up or not.
