The ‘Dogg’ joins Nation of Islam

March 2, 2009

First it was the Michael Jackson and now  the famous Grammy award nominated American rapper Snoop Dogg, who recently featured alongside Akshay Kumar in the title song of the movie  ‘Singh is Kinng’ (no that is not a typo, there is actually an extra ‘n’ there, thanks to the numerologists), claims to have converted to Islam. BBC reports.

Snoop Dogg has revealed he has joined the Nation of Islam after appearing at the religious group’s annual Saviours’ Day event in Chicago…….He told reporters that he joined the group because he was “doing what’s right and representing what’s right”. It preaches self-reliance for black people within an Islamic framework.

 Not that the NOI is an orthodox Islamic movement, but I can’t help wonder – what does joining nation of Islam and has anything to do with ‘doing what’s right’ ? And, how has ‘self-reliance for black -people’ have anything to do with Islamic framework ? As if without the Islamic framework, black people wouldn’t be self-reliant.

Sounds like a bunch of crazy ‘crapizzle’ to me !!

He said afterwards that listening to the speech from Mr Farrakhan was “about a mirror – it’s about looking at yourself”. He added: “We’re doing a lot of wrongs among ourselves that need correcting.”

Someone was brainwashed pretty good while he was busy smoking weed. What a shame. As if, this world needed another celebrity in the fangs of death of another cult.

      @Tarun

      You missed the point. To begin with, any celebrity joining any religious cult gives that cult a lot of media attention which just improves the status of the cult. It would have been equally bad had he joined the Mormon church or the church of scientology which are nothing more than cults. If you read about the nation of Islam you will see that they have very little in common with Islam per se. Although they have now moved closer to the sunni movement they still are very different. Moreover, the nation of Islam is shamelessly racist and often spreads hate speech against jews and white people.

      My other point was the reasons why snoop dogg joined NOI. If you look at his reasons in the BBc report, it is very clear that he has been brainwashed and is regurgitating the same lines he was brainwashed with. The reasons for which he joined NOI are baseless as I tried to point out in my post. I am afraid that when celebrities like him fail to think for themselves and get brainwashed into joining an active hate group, it attracts more people to join the group which ultimately becomes detrimental to society.

      YOu may want to read this

    Yup, someone was really high while being talked to. And Islam is growing in Europe too.

    The Nation Of Islam was set up by God himself. Not for you the devil, so sit back and watch your world fall

    I can’t keep a straight face when I hear about the NOI. “White people were invented 6000 years ago by evil scientists on the island of Patmos”?

      LOL!!! Yes some of their claims are ludicrous.

  5. March 3, 2009 8:10 pm

    So just because NOI is amoral [as you think and judge] so any person joining it will also be amoral/hypocrite??
    And if people are just following anyone blindly then there is no point worrying about them, there is a big pit called Life, which will tell them eventually 😀
    Everyone is born with a head over his shoulder and if he/she is not using it, then what can one do??

      @tarun

      First I think NOI is a hate cult. it’s not my opinion but a fact. Moreover if that is the case why try to bring about social change ..why speak out against any injustice at all..wouldn’t we be better off keeping our mouths shut and let life take it’s course ?

      keep up your questions..alternative points of view are always welcome 🙂

    See that is actually happening. Gandhi died, Bhagat Singh died, Bose died, Nehru who gave us IIT’s(I love him just because of this :), although i don’t hate him] he also died but “masses” never changed, change is observed in an individual not in “masses”. All my Life I tried and worked on these facts[I am 22, although, so a lot of Life is left for me(insha~allah):)] but now I have realized that awakening happens to individual only, not to the masses.
    As far as NOI is concerned, if it is a hate cult then it will definitely go to hell, one day, but when will that day come, I don’t know and if it is late then “Sacrifice” of the lives/mind/health/wealth of the affected people will happen and why “this” happens I don’t know 😦

      @tarun

      Individuals do make up the masses and only by changing the individuals can we ever dream of changing masses. I also disagree that “masses never changed”, I think we did, albeit slowly. Think about the barbaric practices of Sati, child marriage etc which have changed over the years and is no longer followed. I think every change is slow and each social movement typically takes a long time – slowly building on the work of previous generations. I wouldn’t be surprised if social changes take hundreds of years. If you look at the US, it took more than 100 years after the civil war for blacks to obtain their civil rights. So I am hopeful that someday the masses will change and the way to change it is one individual at a time.

      Btw, I don’t believe in heaven or hell so for me the change has to happen on this earth. We cannot wait for NOI to go to hell 😀

    Hell or Heaven is bullshit~Agreed 🙂
    “Individual” means individual not a part of mass, individuality means sense of being, existence [I am no preacher] 😀
    Lastly, you are also saying the same thing as I am and that is, Sacrifice, you said 100 years but what about the people/lives which were to be Lived in the span of those unlucky 100 years??
    Something complex is going on here 🙂

    @ Tarun

    Masses do change. There is considerable literature in sociology and athropology textbooks on the same. Social consciousness, conformity, mass movements et al have been historically observed to be strong forces in the organisation of man as a communal being (not the same ‘communal’ used to define certain Indian parties etc), and aren’t academic terms that have no practical use.

  9. March 5, 2009 12:41 am

    @Sidharth – Good, if you believe that “masses” change. 🙂
    But socialism, anthropology is something I don’t believe in.The only thing that is and will be is Loving what you do or Doing what you Love, otherwise gandhi’s/Nehru’s/Bhagat’s and even Che Guevara’s will come and go and nothing will happen. This whole cycle is endless, this is what can be seen as hell 🙂

  10. March 5, 2009 9:26 am

    @ Tarun – Social change is not something that one can choose to believe in or not. I don’t “believe” in it. I know it’s true because there is enough recorded historical evidence confirming it.

    “But socialism, anthropology is something I don’t believe in”. Pardon me for my arrogance and weird sense of humor, but this is funny! Sociology isn’t the same as socialism, and no one’s talking about socialism here. Anthropology, like sociology, is the name of an academic subject. 🙂

    However, I completely agree with you on loving what I do and doing what I love. I only wished everyone followed this golden rule.

    And I understand you stand against ideology and mass movements: fair enough! I agree that the masses often get carried away with ideologies, and it’s often good to be vary. I’m suspect about most of them too! 😛

    So… Snoop Dogg is Muslim now? ROFL. I wonder what NOI makes of the restriction on music by Muslim fundies. And what about Gin & Juice with gin being forbidden and all 🙂 Maybe he can change the lyrics to Tea & Milk.

  12. March 5, 2009 10:10 pm

    @SID-
    Oho!! Accepted that I took Sociology to Socialism 🙂
    2. You sense of humor don’t seem that weird as you claim yours to be 😀
    3. Life is beautiful, enjoy.

    Oh, gah, Nation of Islam is NUTS. Farrakhan thinks he went up in a space ship for crying out loud!

    Well, at least Snoop didn’t become a Scientologist like Will Smith did. *eyeroll*
