Muslims Organizations in Germany Sign Manifesto Against Sharia

May 6, 2009

It’s great to see some muslims finally taking the first bold step towards transitioning from laws based on bronze age beliefs to that based on contemporary secular ideals. It commendable on the part of certain Islamic organizations in Germany to have come together to condemn and oppose the regressive Sharia laws. Even though I am not sure how much support these 10 organizations can garner from the mainstream Muslim community, but it’s definitely an encouraging move [Link]

The Aims of the group are as follows

• To explain to Muslims the dangers contained in the Islamic religious texts, as well as the necessity of a reform of Islam
• To explain to non-Muslims the differences between moderate Muslims and Islamists (a.k.a. religious fanatics, radical Muslims, fundamentalists, extremists, Islamo-fascists)
• To inform both Muslims and non-Muslims that they are both the targets of Islamic terrorism

The sections of the declarations are as follows (you can read the full text on the website linked above)

  1. Acknowledging mistakes
  2. Contradictions in the Koran
  3. The Koran and the Bible
  4. The Necessity of Reform
  5. Accepting Responsibility
  6. Private Religious Sphere
  7. Equality
  8. Sharia
  9. Outdated Practices
  10. Outdated verses
  11. Out-dated words and phrases
  12. Islam against Violence
  13. Artistic Depictions of the Prophet
  14. The Crusades and the Inquisition

I have my doubts about the success of this manifesto because #2, #9-11, #13 are deal-breakers for a lot of Muslims, but I sincerely hope muslims can come out of the denial mode they are in now and critically think or debate these issues.  I also hope that the members of these organizations are not executed as apostates as has been the case for anyone who had tried to reform Islam.

Do any of you know about other Muslim organizations in other countries who have a similar manifesto?

    Won’t work.

    1) Like you mentioned, some issued are huge hang-ups with Muslims.
    2) If you thought the Mohammed Cartoons controversy was bad, then please consider what the reaction to this might be. Should you find yourself short of cash, look for online bounties on the heads of these men.

I am not a bounty hunter but I think that if it happens it will be sad.

I commend these organizations for having the balls to do this. As a matter of fact, my recent post Does robust critique (of Islam) alienate moderate muslims? has yielded a string of comments questioning whether such a thing as “Moderate Muslim” exists and whether it is potent enough to take into consideration when critiquing Islam.

The Koran purports to be the final, immutable and irrevocable word of God. This means that no further edits, insertions, and qualification (or interpretations) are permissible because God’s pronouncements cannot be superseded by human intellect or wisdom. The premise is: God is an all-wise ass-hole and if he spews shit, we are stuck with it.

By this line of thinking, these fine folks will be denounced (or worse) as apostates. This is really the time for mainstream muslims who claim to be “moderate” to rise up in defense of these folks and grant them the legitimacy (at least of numbers). But judging by previous actions, they will just sit by impassively and impotently.

This is the reason why I have concluded in an earlier post on my blog that that Moderate muslims are culpable (if not complicit)

Thanks for this link – I’ll definitely make it a point to read through it.

yes that’s what I am afraid about too..let the majority of moderate muslims prove themselves..if they don’t support these people now they cannot expect others to exonerate them of the blame of being complicit/culpable
